While some of us will always see her as Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall has a new television role — and the Sex and the City alum is excited for fans to watch her explore another (albeit very different) powerful woman on the small screen. The 63-year-old actress will both appear in and produce the soapy new Fox drama Filthy Rich, which is her first project for network TV. Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Cattrall likened the role to the “next chapter” in her life.
Per Deadline, Filthy Rich follows the events that transpire after the mega-wealthy patriarch of a successful Christian television network dies in a plane crash. Cattrall stars as Margaret Monreaux, the surviving widow and co-founder of the network who discovers that her late husband fathered three illegitimate children. And, surprise again, they’re all written into his will, creating a hotbed of family drama.
“With Margaret, I’m exploring the next chapter of my life,” Cattrall explained. “She is in her 60s like I am, you’re starting to lose your family members, friends; it brings to question what now and how much longer. I like to work things out in my work. I think if I’m having them, maybe other people are having them, maybe other women are having them.”
It’s not that Cattrall hasn’t acted since Sex and the City went off the air in 2004. But she was very intentional in choosing another episodic project. “After Sex and the City, I waited a long time to go back to television. It wasn’t until I saw Sensitive Skin that I really wanted to go back to television.” That series, which ran from 2014 to 2016, sparked something on a personal level. “I was having a lot of questions about mid-life crisis, about menopause, about what now, what is the next chapter of my life.”
So, as she did with Sensitive Skin, Cattrall gets to dive into some of those questions with Filthy Rich. Yet, it’s a new frontier for her in more than one way. “I don’t come from the South, I wasn’t raised in a religious household,” she said. Plus, there’s the fact it’s her first time on network TV. “Coming back to television has changed so much just since I did Sex and the City… you have to be right on your game all the time.”
Cattrall is up for the challenge, though. And although she understands that fans will always love her as Samantha Jones, she feels confident they’ll appreciate Margaret, too. “What I think people love about shows like Sex and the City and Filthy Rich is strong characters,” she shared. “You know, real strong characters. And this is a new chapter, this is another strong character.”
