Did Sam Heughan Just Spoil That Murtagh Dies in Outlander Season 5?

We’re counting down the days to the return of Outlander, and the cast has been making the rounds teasing what to expect from Season 5. At a panel last night, star Sam Heughan‘s response to a question about Murtagh had the audience (and co-star Caitríona Balfe) gasping — and thinking he might just have spoiled Murtagh’s fate in the upcoming season. Here’s exactly what he said, so you can judge for yourself.

SheKnows attended a 92nd Street Y screening of Outlander‘s Season 5 premiere, and witnessed this potentially groundbreaking slip. Referencing the episode they’d just screened, the moderator asked Heughan if he could speak about his “last scene with Murtagh.”

“Yes,” Heughan replied, but co-star Caitríona Balfe quickly cut him off. “No,” she corrected, giving him a warning look.

“Oh! This scene here,” Heughan corrected, gesturing toward the screen. “Yes, I can talk about that.”

At this point, the audience was already rumbling: what other last scene with Murtagh would she be talking about, hmm?! And Sophie Skelton’s next joke only made us more suspicious: “Remember that panel where Sam Heughan got fired?”

While Starz might not be HBO-level intense when it comes to spoilers, they still wouldn’t look too kindly on a major character’s death being spoiled before the season even airs. (Though of course, Heughan could never be fired. Never.)

We’ve promised not to reveal any other details about the episode we saw, but we’ll say this: You’re going to want to tune in. It’s been too long since Claire and Jamie graced our screens, and it felt so good to be back.

Outlander returns on Sunday, February 16. Watch on Starz at 8 p.m. ET.
