It’s been a long winter since the end of Stranger Things 3. Finally, Netflix has given us the gift of a Stranger Things 4 teaser to (kind of) answer our burning questions about how they left off last year — with the biggest question, of course, being whether or not Jim Hopper died at the end of last season. Hopper stans can finally breathe a sigh of relief: David Harbour’s surly police chief appears to be alive and well, though we have no idea what to make of his surroundings. Let’s dissect.
The Stranger Things 4 teaser, titled “From Russia With Love,” takes place in — you guessed it — Russia (no, we can’t get more specific than that). Ominous music plays as we scan over a snowy landscape, narrowing in to see fur hat-clad and heavily armed Russians guarding a worksite. A group of men swing pickaxes at a railroad track, and the camera focuses in on one worker in particular, who takes off his hat…
And it’s Hopper! (Of course.) Head newly shaven, Hopper wipes the sweat off his brow and looks up at the sky. He looks tired, and at least a little angry, but that’s also how Hopper looks 100% of the time, so it’s hard to read into it. This teaser confirms that the series will be going beyond the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and start exploring the other nation that’s been dabbling in Demogorgons and the Upside Down.
Stranger Things fans will remember that a Russian subplot was introduced in Season 3, but we don’t know what this will mean for our beloved Hawkins characters. (Or, for that matter, how Hopper survived going through that portal and why it spat him back out in Russia.) Will we see Finn and his friends take a field trip, or will the season cut back and forth between these two storylines?
Hopefully, we’ll get more answers in a full-length trailer. The best part of all this? Netflix releasing this teaser now means we won’t have too much longer to wait for the real thing.
