The queen of keeping it real, Chrissy Teigen continues in the tradition of being her authentic, unapologetic self in her latest interview. But this time, she’s opening up about something she hasn’t discussed before: her boob job and why, now that she’s had children, her feelings about it have changed. More pointedly, though, Teigen tackles the importance of transparency in the age of photo filters and perfect little squares on social media.
Chatting with Josh Smith for Glamour UK, Teigen wasted no time addressing the long-standing rumors that she’d had her breast augmented. “Yeah, I did my boobs when I was about 20 years old,” she said, explaining, “It was more for a swimsuit thing. I thought, If I’m going to be posing, laid on my back, I want them to be perky! But then you have babies and they fill up with milk and deflate and now I am screwed.”
But it isn’t just the changes to her body that have occurred since having kids that have altered the way Teigen feels about her breast implants. “I had a quarter ‘teardrop’ cup in the bottom and filled out the breast line. But I want them out now. If I could do one thing, it would be to have a lift. I think you’re supposed to replace [implants] every ten years,” she shared. “But when you have kids you think about [the risks] of surgery and I think, ‘This is not the way I want to die, in boob surgery.”
So, yes, Teigen had a boob job. The cat’s out of the bag. It’s her body and her prerogative to do with it whatever makes her feel good. What we really love about her admission, though, is that Teigen doesn’t feel shame in her decision — she’s sharing it so that she can cut through some of the noise that’s contributing to unrealistic beauty standards.
“You can’t set these expectations for people that everything is perfect. Everyone filters their shit, edits or Facetunes so you forget what normal faces or bodies look like. It’s not fair and it makes you jealous of other people’s bodies. It’s lying to people by omission. But also, while you want to teach your kids to be comfortable in their own skin, you want to tell them everything you can and let them decide,” Teigen said.
Not that Teigen is passing judgment on those of us who do fall prey to that whole trap of criticizing our own bodies. It took her time to get the healthy body image she has today. “I used to weigh myself every morning, afternoon and night. I knew what the scales would say after each meal. I did that for eight years and had this one weigh I wanted to be at,” she admitted. However, becoming a mom has a way of affecting your perspective.
“That changed with Luna, and really changed with Miles, where it took me a year to be comfortable with my new normal number,” she said, adding that she still has moments of insecurity. “I do look at [my body] in the shower and think, ‘Arghhh, these kids.’ But I don’t take the aesthetics so seriously now. It’s very fulfilling not having that pressure of putting on a swimsuit and looking good for a magazine while running around a beach, which I did when I was modeling.”
In true Teigen form, the Cravings author alludes to the fact that she has plenty of fuel for her self-deprecation without harping on any self-perceived physical flaws. Smiling, she said, “I don’t feel like my body is where I’m going to be shitty to myself, either. I’m already thinking enough things I am mad at myself about, I can’t add my body into it.”
As most women and mamas know, it’s worth celebrating when you’re able to let go of insecurities and embrace your body for being so badass. (I’m still working on accepting my post-pregnancy, lower-belly “kangaroo pouch.”) For Teigen, the milestone she’s most proud of on that front is learning to love her “pug face,” she said through laughter.
“If you hear the same comment over and over again, it gets to you. But when you are happy in other aspects of your life, you care less about it,” she shared. “When I see my crazy, weird smile and my teeth being too big for my mouth, I see it as showing genuine emotion and happiness, so I don’t see it as a negative thing anymore.”
