Vanessa Bryant, the widow of late Kobe Bryant, has asked a judge to revise his trust for a very important reason: Their youngest daughter, Capri, wasn’t included in the last draft. It hasn’t even been two months since the NBA icon and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant (along with seven other passengers) tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on January 26. And while Vanessa is undoubtedly still struggling to process her grief, she hasn’t lost sight of her surviving children and making sure that they’ll all be cared for as they navigate this new reality.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Kobe initially created a trust for Vanessa and their three oldest daughters — Natalia, Gianna, and Bianka in 2003. With each child, the trust was updated, with the latest update taking place in 2017. However, Capri was born nine months ago, and they hadn’t yet had a chance to reflect that with a new amendment. As such, Vanessa has filed a request to remedy Kobe’s trust posthumously.
There shouldn’t be any issue doing so since, as Vanessa points out in her petition, Kobe’s clear intent in creating the trust was to provide for his children. The only reason Capri isn’t included in the document is the family’s unforeseen tragedy.

“The material purpose of the Trust is to provide a fund for Kobe’s wife and daughters of Koe and Vanessa for their support, care, and maintenance and, at the same time, provide protection for the Trust’s assets so that the assets will be available for the benefit of Kobe and Vanessa’s daughters, equally, upon Vanessa’s death,” according to documents obtained by The Blast. “The proposed modification furthers and supports the primary purposed of the trust. The First Partial Amendment makes clear Kobe’s intent to provide for ‘any children of [his] marriage to Vanessa’ in his trust.”
As a mother, it’s almost impossible for me to imagine the strength Vanessa has to summon every day to be present for Natalia, Bianka and Capri with her devastation over the loss of her husband and Gianna still so fresh. She’s living every wife and mother’s worst nightmare, but she’s still present and fighting for her family… Capri specifically, in this case, who she just wants to be cared for like the couple’s other children. It’s a truly heartbreaking reminder that some things simply can’t be anticipated and, because of that, it’s vital to keep any legal documents pertaining to our children updated.
Kobe’s trust agreement stipulates that Vanessa, Natalia, and Bianka can draw from the principal and income in the trust during Vanessa’s lifetime. Upon her death, the kids would receive the remainder of the trust. So, Vanessa’s request is simple, straightforward and entirely reasonable — she just wants her youngest daughter with Kobe to be granted access to that distribution as well.
