It’s Mother’s Day in the UK, and Kate Middleton is leaning into a little nostalgia. To celebrate this matriarchal holiday, the Duchess shared a rare throwback photo of her own mom, Carole Middleton — and let’s just say it’s not hard to see the family resemblance. Kate shared the blast from the past of her lookalike mom as part of a larger tribute to moms everywhere, including Prince William‘s (and Prince Harry’s) late mom, Princess Diana.
The post, shared in the early hours of Sunday morning to the Kensington Royal Instagram account, features four photos. They show the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their children in Norfolk; Diana, Princess of Wales, with her children William and Harry; Carole with baby Kate; and a card from Kate and William’s son, Prince George, to his mother on Mother’s Day. In addition to the photos, the post included a message of solidarity in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. “To mothers new and old and families spending today together and apart — we are thinking of you all at this difficult time,” the caption read.
And while the entire message is beautiful, followers couldn’t help but fixate on how much Kate looks like young Carole. “Wow, the Duchess is totally her mom,” wrote one person. Added another, “Thank you for sharing these lovely photos! The Duchess looks so much like her beautiful mum.”

Kate (and Will, presumably) weren’t the only royals in their feelings on this UK holiday. The Royal Family‘s official Instagram feed also shared a beautiful flashback. “Today is #MotheringSunday,” began the caption of a black-and-white photo. “The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, is pictured with her mother, Queen Elizabeth, in 1951.”

Like Kate and Will’s post, the Royal Family Instagram post included words of encouragement during this troubled time. “Mothering Sunday is a chance to thank and celebrate all mothers and caregivers, wherever they may be. Today may be a different and difficult day for those who would usually plan to spend time with their mothers, as we adapt to the necessary changes and disruption to our normal routine and regular pattern of life. But for all Mums everywhere, we are thinking of you and wish you all a very special day,” said the caption.
Across the pond in Canada, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared a simple graphic featuring several words — Mummy, Mum, Mom, Mama, Granny, Nan — along with a simple but heartfelt sentiment: Thank you. Their caption emphasized the importance of mothers all over the globe, saying, “No matter what you call your mum, this Mother’s Day in the UK, we honor the mums all over the world who do so much every single day, and now more than ever.”
Hear, hear!
