Blake Shelton’s newest music video may be our most favorite yet, and we’re not talking about his recent duet with girlfriend Gwen Stefani (although, to be clear, we love that too). Rather, Shelton made a Today show cameo on Thursday morning to honor a mother-daughter nursing duo — and, not surprisingly, he paid tribute to the women in song. The resulting video, although not an official Shelton production, qualifies as one of his greatest hits in our book.
As Today continued their National Nurses Week celebration, anchor Hoda Kotb introduced the world to a New Orleans nursing assistant by the name of Bridgette Robinson. While taking care of others as a frontline worker during the coronavirus pandemic, Robinson ended up contracting COVID-19. What followed was a harrowing ordeal for her and her family, with Robinson being intubated and spending weeks on a ventilator. “It definitely was scary and heartbreaking, especially the fact that she’s my best friend,” Robinson’s daughter Sylvia Johnson, who is also a nurse, told Kotb. When asked why she thought Robinson was now in recovery, Johnson replied, “God, prayers, and her fight for life.”
Wanting to celebrate the women’s service to others and Robinson’s recovery, Kotb arranged a special guest appearance: her good friend Shelton, who virtually serenaded the women with a special rendition of his song “God Gave Me You.”

Calling the women a “light shining bright,” Shelton praised them for their bravery in the fight against the novel coronavirus. “Everything about this disease, I mean, you guys are out there on the frontlines fighting it, and now you’re a survivor of it,” he gushed.
He also acknowledged the special bond they so clearly share. “You’ve got each other, and that’s really what this is all about,” he said, continuing, “The whole time I heard you guys talking and you keep throwing it back to God, and I love hearing you say that. So, I want to dedicate this song from me to you guys as nurses out there being on the frontlines. But really, I think this song really speaks to your relationship with each other, if you ask me.”
