Being pregnant is a rollercoaster of hormones under the most ideal conditions. Throw in a global pandemic and, well, it can be downright overwhelming. That’s where first-time expectant mama Katy Perry currently finds herself — dealing with “waves of depression” in quarantine. The “Never Worn White” singer, who is engaged to Orlando Bloom, is set to welcome a daughter sometime this summer. And although she’s excited about it, she’s also struggling to cope with her emotions during this extended period of isolation.
Taking to Twitter on Monday afternoon, Perry got vulnerable about the feelings she’s been dealing with in recent months. “Sometimes I don’t know what’s worse,” she lamented, “trying to avoid the virus or the waves of depression that come with this new norm.”
It isn’t the first time she’s opened up about possible prenatal depression, either. During this weekend’s SHEIN Together live-stream festival, she shared her struggles. “I would say I have five good days and two days where I just… I cry when I look down at my toes, or I cry when just doing simple tasks,” she admitted, noting that her mood swings could be a natural part of pregnancy. “I think that a lot of that is probably hormonal.”

Having said that, Perry also understands that dealing with such scary and uncertain times could certainly be affecting her mental health — especially when you consider how quarantine has forced her outside of her comfort zone so much.
“You know, I’m not used to being around so many people, all in a confined, small space for so long,” Perry said. “I’m used to going all the time. I like my own alone time, and there’s not really anywhere to go for that, besides my car.” To that end, Perry visits her car (which is parked outside of her house) a lot. “That is my safe space,” she admitted.
Perry has discussed mental health struggles in the past, telling Vogue India in January that she hit a low point from 2017 to 2018. “I became depressed and I did not want to get out of bed,” she shared. “In the past, I had been able to overcome it, but this time something happened that made me fall down too many flights of stairs. I had to really go on a mental health journey.”
Part of that journey, as it turns out, was finding Bloom, whom Perry described as “an anchor who holds me down.”
