While Nikki Bella and her fiancé Artem Chigvintsev are now happily together and expecting their first child, that wasn’t always the case. In this week’s episode of Total Bellas, Nikki faces another negative pregnancy test and is forced to confront the real possibility that her fertility issues will stand in the way of their having a child. At this point, Nikki’s not yet sure herself that she really wants to be pregnant. But when she confronts Chigvintsev with the idea of a life without kids, his reaction is telling.
After taking a negative pregnancy test, Nikki starts to realize just how little she and Chigvintsev have really discussed the prospect of kids, or what kind of parents they would want to be. “I don’t even know what Artem’s beliefs are with kids,” she admits in a confessional. “That would freak me out. All of a sudden I’m gonna have a baby with this guy and I don’t even know his values on raising a kid?”
Determined to get on the same page about their future, Nikki asks him point-blank: Does he want to stay with her, even knowing they might never have kids?
“I don’t know,” Chigvintsev answers honestly. “Because I don’t know if it’s something that I would regret for the rest of my life, later on in my life, our life. Family is very important to me, and you knew that from the very beginning.”
At this point in her Total Bellas journey, Nikki is sure about Chigvintsev, but hasn’t always seen kids in her immediate future the way he does. “I love Artem to death, but why would I want to be pregnant?” she says in a confessional. “My companies need my attention 24/7, which is already difficult. And then podcasts, the YouTube channel and a wine tour — like, there’s a lot of things I need to check off my list.”
Clearly, she and Chigvintsev had different timelines and different priorities at they time. But as they excitedly await the arrival of their little one, we know these parents-to-be have taken the time to really hash out their values and future plans. And that’s something every expecting couple can learn from.
