Being quarantined due to the current global health crisis means we’ve all had to adjust to a new reality. Spoiler alert? The Royals are no exception. In fact, like so many of us, Prince William is still struggling to master one particular aspect of the coronavirus quarantine: homeschooling. The Duke of Cambridge is getting real about the “challenges” of becoming an impromptu teacher to Prince George, 6, and Princess Charlotte, 5 — and this may be the closest we’ve come yet to feeling like we’re on the same level as a royal.
William, who also shares two-year-old son Louis with wife Kate Middleton, alluded to his homeschooling learning curve in the new BBC documentary Football, Prince William and Mental Health. “Homeschooling is fun, isn’t it?” William joked in a Zoom call with other parents, admitting of his highly relatable insecurity, “You start to worry about how little you remember from your school days when you can’t do the maths questions at home.”
Former England football (read: soccer in the U.S.) goalie Joe Hart agreed, confessing he was clueless about phonics until helping his five-year-old with school. “The challenges of lockdown, hey!” William playfully replied. And, let’s be real, most of us at home with our kids right now understand all too well what William means.

Fortunately for the royal father-of-three, he’s had help in this unique educational journey — in an interview with ITV’s This Morning last month, Kate also alluded to homeschooling hiccups. “We’re stuck into homeschooling again,” she shared. “George gets very upset because he just wants to do all of Charlotte’s projects. Spider sandwiches are far cooler than literacy work!”
Still, the royal couple is obviously committed to filling in the gaps while their children’s school, St. Thomas’s Battersea, is closed. “Don’t tell the children; we’ve actually kept it going through the holidays. I feel very mean!” Kate said with a laugh of homeschooling through Easter break.
Given Kate and Will’s comments, it’s not surprising that they have a newfound appreciation for their kids’ multi-tasking capacity. “The children have got such stamina, I don’t know how. Honestly, you get to the end of the day and you write down the list of all the things that you’ve got done in that day. So, you pitch a tent, take the tent down again, cook, bake. You get to the end of the day — they have had a lovely time — but it is amazing how much you can cram into one day, that’s for sure.”
