This past year has felt like we’re all stuck in a time loop, so it’s fitting that the heroes of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things are as well. It’s in the same vein as the popular Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg, and the original time-loop film, Groundhog Day. Luckily, this time-loop, unlike our own, hasn’t become stale.
Mark (Kyle Allen), who is 17 years old, has gotten stuck in a loop. During one monotonous day, he spots Margaret (Kathryn Newton). She’s never been in his loop before, so she stands out. They figure out that they are both doomed to repeat the same day in their hometown again and again. The two start to fall for each other. She dreams of working at NASA someday, while he dreams of being an artist. It’s a match made in time-loop heaven, so it’s perfect that it’s coming out Valentine’s Day weekend.
We don’t want to give anything else away. This story does take some twists and turns. The movie is based off of a short story by Lev Grossman who also wrote the series The Magicians.
