Cher, the iconic entertainer, journeys to Pakistan to rescue an Asian elephant named Kaavan from a decade of isolation in captivity. The heart-wrenching documentary is available to watch now, on Earth Day, exclusively on Paramount+.
Kaavan is a malnourished and depressed elephant who spent nearly two decades languishing in chains. He had a mate, but that mate died of neglect. He’s been dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant” by animal activists. Cher became aware of his plight and decided that she needed to use her influence to do something. She co-founded Free the Wild to help advocate for his rescue and recorded the song “Walls” to raise awareness.
“I found out about Kaavan from the people on my Twitter,” Cher said in a press release. “They would not stop saying ‘Cher, you have to do something, you have to fix this, you have to save him.’ I thought how can I fix this? How can I save an elephant who’s been shackled to a shed for 17 years and who is a thousand miles away? This is Free The Wild’s first big rescue and I am so proud. We are thrilled to partner with the Smithsonian Channel who will be helping to bring our story to the world.”
In May 2020, Pakistani high court ordered Kaavan’s freedom. In November, over Thanksgiving, the singer rushed to Pakistan to help coordinate the suffering elephant’s transfer to a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia. This documentary follows that harrowing move.
