Whether you look back at old photos, footage, or interviews, one trait of Princess Diana‘s always comes through — how close she was with her sonsPrince William and Prince Harry. With the latter of the two brothers making the decision to move his family away from the toxicity and tabloid culture they experienced in the U.K., we’ve wondered if the late Princess of Wales would’ve ever done the same, especially given just how scrutinized she was throughout her royal life. Now, we know why Diana wouldn’t have moved away from the U.K., and it all has to do with her sons.
During an interview with Coffee Friend (which was shared in full with Marie Claire), Chef Darren McGrady, who cooked for Princess Diana for years, revealed why the late Princess of Wales would never have made the same decision as Harry. “She would have never had moved away, that is purely because of her boys,” McGrady shared. “She would never have moved to another country and left her young boys in the U.K.”

It’s important to note that Princess Diana and Prince Harry were both dealt very different circumstances that influenced their decision. Princess Diana’s entire family was in the U.K., it was the place where her boys were being raised, and where their futures as prominent members of the royal family were practically set. As for Harry, his wife, Meghan Markle, is originally from California, and the couple’s children — Archie, 2, and Lilibet, 9 months — likely won’t be in the immediate line of succession, thus giving them more freedom than Diana ever had.
McGrady also noted that Diana had “grown up with her parents separated. There’s no way she would have abandoned her children. Would she have had a place in Malibu? I think so, she’d have had a beach house.” It’s undeniable the incredibly difficult circumstances Princess Diana had to endure as a member of the royal family. But in order to wholly be there for her sons, Diana made the decision to remain in the U.K. Having witnessed what his mother endured, however, it’s no surprise why Harry made his choice, and why comparing the mother and son’s situations has become such a talking point.
