Most first kisses are memorable not because they are sweep-you-off-your-feet romantic but because they are awkward and nerve-wracking. Even though Salma Hayek Pinault might seem like a bombshell with unlimited confidence and abilities, she too was once a teen nervous to impress with her first smooch. The Hollywood icon opened up about what she did in order to prepare for the kiss and the disastrous results from said preparation.
“It was very memorable for a very stupid long story,” Hayek Pinault said of her first kiss, which took place in her “little town in Mexico” near a river.
“I wanted to taste good,” she explained to W magazine in an interview before the SAG-AFTRA strike, so she “kept putting honey on my lips.”
On paper, this doesn’t seem like anything too wild — after all, there are tons of lip and skincare products that utilize honey. The plan worked, too. After her first kiss, she asked what it taste like “and he said like honey,” she smiled, acknowledging that the idea of lips tasting like honey is a total cliché.
Unfortunately, the Black Mirror star really, really wanted her lips to taste good all of the time, so she continuously applied the honey to her lips. “So I keep putting honey on my lips and I burnt my mouth and I had an infestation of ants in my bedroom.” Ah, the things we do for young love!
“Something that started real romantic turned out to be kind of disastrous,” she explained as producers laughed in the background. Hayek Pinault went on to explain that “in Mexico we eat ant eggs fried in a special way and we eat also crickets… but live ants? It’s a whole different thing.” We absolutely agree.
Luckily, Hayek Pinault is able to look back at the whole ordeal and laugh about it. Let’s all learn a lesson from this and not use so much honey as a lip moisturizer that ants decide to move in with us.
