The Queen of Rom-Coms Meg Ryan Makes a Long-Awaited Comeback in the Trailer for What Happens Later

When with think of our favorite rom-coms, the chances are that most of us think of one actress: Meg Ryan. From When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got MailtoSleepless in Seattle, Ryan solidified herself as the undisputed queen of the genre back in the late 80s and 90s. And though Ryan took a well-deserved break from acting, her last movie credit being 2015’s Ithaca, per IMDb, she’s finally back in the upcoming movie What Happens Later.

And, in addition to starring in the movie alongside The X-FilesDavid Duchovny, Ryan is also making one hell of comeback as the movie marks her second time in the directors’ seat too. How exciting!

Per the movie’s trailer, What Happens Later follows two exes, Bill and Willa, as they miss their connection and get snowed in at a regional airport overnight. “Indefinitely delayed, Willa, a magical thinker, and Bill, a catastrophic one, find themselves just as attracted to and annoyed by one another as they did decades earlier,” the description reads.

“I’ve been 49 for ever and ever,” Ryan’s Willa says in the trailer. “Wow lucky you!” Duchovny’s Bill responds. “I feel like I’ve been in my 50s since my twenties.”

As the two succumb to the boredom of being at the airport with nothing to do, Bill’s jitters start to bubbling up to the surface. “What are you worrying about?” Willa asks. “Everything,” he responds.

“Relax you’re already living out your worst-case scenario,” she says later on in the trailer. “What, being stuck here with you? You make a good point.”

And, after they get the small talk out of the way, the two start to question what went wrong in their relationship in the first place. “But as they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something more enchanted,” the description reads.

“Have you ever wondered what if?” Willa asks Bill. “If we could see our memories in advance would we do anything different?”

In the comments of the trailer, fans of Ryan are unsurprisingly freaking out. “She’s still the romcom queen!!!!!” wrote one user. “Just seeing Meg in something makes me smile. Can’t wait for this,” wrote another. “So nostalgic to see Meg on screen again,” said another. We couldn’t agree more!

What Happens Later will be released in theaters this fall. We can’t wait!
