Meghan Markle’s time in the royal family may have been fraught with tensions but she allegedly had an ally in one surprising member. In journalist Andrew Morton’s book, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess — which is almost 60% off on Amazon right now — the author claims Queen Camilla had a means of subtly showing support from Prince Harry’s wife.
According to Morton, via The Mirror, Prince Harry’s stepmother wanted to show Markle that she was “accepted” into the family — though its clear from what we know now about the months leading up to Markle and Harry’s departure that Camilla’s alleged support wasn’t enough to help the couple.
Morton details one of Camilla’s “coded” gestures on King Charles’ 70th birthday in 2018 when Camilla allegedly broke royal protocol to kiss Markle goodbye. “This rare royal gesture was a sign of how quickly the American actor had been accepted and treated with genuine affection by the Royal Family,” Morton explained.
“On that day, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who had previously advised Kate Middleton on the finer points of protocol during her royal apprenticeship, was, without saying a word, signaling to the watching world that Meghan was now ‘one of us.'”
While Markle hasn’t spoken directly about the details of her relationship with Camilla, apart from expressing how hurt she felt about how she was treated by the Royal Family in general, Harry has been a little more candid when it comes to his feelings about the woman who his father cheated on Princess Diana with in his memoir Spare.
Harry recalled wondering if Camilla would be a “wicked stepmother” and even called her “dangerous” at one point in the book. He also claimed his older brother, Prince William, begged their father not to marry Camilla. “Despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead. We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings,” Harry wrote in Spare. “We recognized that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved.”
In January, he told Good Morning America what his relationship is with his stepmother today. “We haven’t spoken for a long time. I love every member of my family, despite the differences,” Harry said, according to People. “So when I see her, we’re perfectly pleasant with each other. She’s my stepmother. I don’t look at her as an evil stepmother. I see someone who married into this institution, and done everything she can to improve her own reputation and her own image, for her own sake.”
