Gwyneth Paltrow is setting the record straight regarding Goop’s This Smells Like My Vagina candle, including her disappointment in the public’s reaction to the viral product.
The actress-turned-entrepreneur hosted a Q&A on her Instagram on Wednesday, during which a fan asked her to explain the thought process behind the internet-breaking candle. Paltrow happily obliged, calling it a “great question” before launching into her explanation.
“So many women have been raised, at least in my generation, to think there’s something wrong with themselves or that the vagina is weird or gross or something to be ashamed of,” Paltrow began. “And so the candle is supposed to be a very strong punk-rock kind of f-you to anyone who ever made us feel like that.”
“It was not supposed to actually smell like anyone’s vagina — it smelled like roses and all kinds of things — and that was the point.” the Iron Man star asserted. She added, “But unfortunately, the media being what it is and things being so clickbait-y, people tried to make it about something else, which is kind of a shame because it was really meant to be this strong feminist statement, but… We no longer make the candle.”
Notes for the This Smells Like My Vagina candle included “geranium, citrusy bergamot, and cedar absolutes juxtaposed with damask rose and ambrette seed,” according to Goop‘s product description. Thanks to the candle’s success (and viral infamy), several other candles were added to the line, including This Smells Like My Orgasm and Hands Off My Vagina.
