Hollywood has an opinion about Danny Masterson’s conviction on two counts of rape, especially after Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher (and others) wrote supportive letters on his behalf. The couple has already released a half-hearted apology video, but it’s celebrities like Christina Ricci, who are weighing in with a strong voice on the subject by shading Kunis and Kutcher for their actions.
“So sometimes people we loved and admired do horrible things. They might not do these things to us, and we only know who they were to us but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do the horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime,” she wrote on her Instagram Story over the weekend. “People we know as ‘awesome guys’ can be predators and abusers. It’s tough to accept but we have to. If we say we support victims – women, children, men, boys – then we must be able to take this stance.” The power couple waffled on this when Kunis noted, “We support victims, we have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.”
It’s a tough apology to accept since a character letter after a conviction doesn’t really feel like a way to support Masterson’s survivors. That’s why Ricci felt compelled to speak up. “Unfortunately I’ve known lots of ‘awesome guys’ who were lovely to me but have been proven to be abusers privately,” she added in her Instagram Story. “I’ve also had personal experience with this. Believe victims. It’s not easy to come forward. It’s not easy to get a conviction.
Kunis and Kutcher likely didn’t know that their letters could become public — it’s up to a judge whether to seal the documents or not. This controversy will take a long time for them to recover from because the damage has been done. Ricci understands this all too well as a child actress in Hollywood and reported domestic violence in her first marriage. Masterson’s victims probably appreciated her support, especially after other celebrities chose the wrong side of history on his conviction.
