Tyra Banks is joining the ranks of Helena Christensen, Paulina Porizkova, Elizabeth Hurley, and most recently, Elle Macpherson, who became the face of fashion designer Karen Millen’s Icon campaign. The 45-year-old supermodel is “very flattered and touched and honored” to follow in their footsteps, especially since Christensen is a role model to her.
“Helena Christensen was everything for me. She’s my generation and we were on the same runways, but she was a little bit … ahead of me,” Banks toldPeople. “To now be called an icon with her touches my 18-year-old self very deeply.” The America’s Top Model star has probably also inspired countless modeling careers over the years, and this particular campaign allows her to “celebrate ageless women who are unapologetically themself no matter age, size, or style.”
The stylishly tailored dresses and trench coats show off Banks’ gorgeous curves, which was important to her as the campaign creative director for the shoot and fashion line. She was often discouraged from certain aspects of modeling because of her body type, but the Karen Millen line is for everyone. “Modeling and having to be in so many different places and hearing you can’t do something every single day of my life because of my skin color [was stressful],” she explained. “Then after I got through some of that hearing, ‘Oh, you’re curvy and you can’t do this fashion show anymore, and you can’t do that.’ It was very difficult.”
Banks believes woman are ready “to channel their inner catwalk in these dynamic pieces as they power-strut down the runways of their world.” Besides the “glam meets luxury” designs, she’s most proud of the affordability of the line. There’s something for everyone in Karen Millen’s line to make you feel like an empowered supermodel just like Banks.
