Drew Barrymore doubled down on her decision to cross the Writers Guild of America (WGA) picket line and return to her daytime talk show on Friday. Her tearful apology may have been heartfelt from her perspective, but her followers weren’t buying her reasoning one bit.
“I believe there’s nothing I can do or say in this moment to make it OK,” Barrymore explained in an Instagram video. “I wanted to own a decision, so that it wasn’t a PR-protected situation, and I would just take full responsibility for my actions.” It evident that she’s seen the criticism across the internet and is hurt by some of the comments, noting, “I know there is just nothing I can do that will make this OK to those that it is not OK with. I fully accept that. I fully understand that. There are so many reasons why this is so complex, and I just want everyone to know my intentions have never been in a place to upset or hurt anymore. It’s not who I am. I’ve been through so many ups and downs in my life, and this is one of them. I deeply apologize to writers. I deeply apologize to unions.”
Barrymore’s emotional post didn’t stop the negative commentary, though. “It’s not complex – you scabbed. next case,” wrote one Instagram account. Another added, “You can choose to halt production and not hire anyone until union demands are met. That’s what you can do to make it okay. Sometimes the right choice doesn’t feel great, but you do it anyway.” A follower chimed in, “Well that didn’t go how I was expecting. Apologizing and then doubling down?” The talk show host probably didn’t get the support she was expecting, even with a deeper explanation.
While Barrymore is not in violation of the SAG-AFTRA strike as a host, the scab issue is strictly with the WGA because her show hires union writers — and there is obviously some type of writing going on if she’s taping shows. The controversy is only going to get bigger next week as The Talk and The Jennifer Hudson Show return to the daytime fold without their WGA writers on staff — it’s about to get really messy for all involved.
