Cindy Crawford is dishing some unknown details about her four-year marriage to Richard Gere. It’s a bit of gossip history that many fans have forgotten about, but the supermodel recalled that time in her life in Apple TV +’s docuseries, The Super Models.

Their short-lived marriage was a notable one because they were not only were they a power couple, but Crawford and Gere also had a pretty big age gap — 17 years, to be exact. The almost two decades that separated them eventually did get in the way of their storied Hollywood romance. “I think I was 22 when we met,” Crawford shared in the third episode. “In the beginning of a relationship when you’re a young woman, you’re like, ‘You like baseball? I like baseball. You’re really into Tibetan Buddhism? I might be into that. I’ll try that.’ You know, you’re willing to kind of mold yourself around whoever you are in love with.”

She was only 22 years old when she met the then-39-year-old Gere. After dating for three years, the good-looking couple eloped in Las Vegas in December 1991. Their union would last until 1995. During that time, though, Crawford’s career underwent as huge transformation from runway star to pop culture icon — and some of it was directly related to Gere’s influence. “[Gere] was older, so I just was, like, in a different circle and not doing some of those same fashiony things anymore,” Crawford continued. “That was a time in my career where I veered away from the high fashion elite and kind of took more charge of my career.”

Crawford took the opportunity to make her 1991 Oscar red carpet appearance into a fashion moment, wearing a gorgeous red Versace gown. “I got invited to go to the Oscars with Richard. I’m like, ‘Well, I mean, what do models do well? We wear clothes well. I better look good,’” she added. “That was kind of what my thinking was: if I’m going to go to the Oscars, I better be a freaking supermodel.” It turned out to be the best move she could possibly make because all eyes were on her and Crawford is credited for bringing fashion back to the Oscars.
