Two years ago, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis seemed to be the heir apparent for the Republican Party nomination in the 2024 presidential election. In 2023, he is barely holding on to second place, far behind frontrunner, Donald Trump. It has many political watchers scratching their heads over how far he’s fallen — and at such a rapid rate.

One of the major issues, beyond his controversial policies, is his personality. He suffers from a “lack of light-up-the-room charisma and folksy authenticity” needed to resonate with GOP voters, according to The New York Times. “He’s very cerebral, very smart,” said Iowa voter John Butler told the media outlet. “But it feels like it can be hard to get to know him.”

The biggest problem for DeSantis seems to be the off-the-cuff moments with his followers. Instead of oozing charm, Dr. Paine Caufield, author of The Iowa Caucus, noted that “he always looks miserable until he’s directly in front of a camera about to take a selfie.” The press has caught a few of those uncomfortable moments including telling a young girl at the state fair that her shaved ice wasn’t good for her. Can’t a child enjoy just a bit of sugar? It was a missed opportunity to have one of those cute campaign trail moments.

Wife Casey DeSantis, supposedly her husband’s “secret weapon” out there on the campaign trail, isn’t making a dent in his numbers either. They’ve tried the Jackie Kennedy-inspiredCamelot cosplay and now, her telegenic personality isn’t wowing Republican voters either. It just might mean that DeSantis’ politics are only fit for one state: Florida.
