The Trump family has been dabbling in many business ventures this year, between Donald Trump Jr’s coffee endorsement and Melania Trump’s Christmas ornament collection. Just when you think you know their next move, they release a Tom Petty cover.
No, you read that right, Eric Trump’s wife Lara Trump released a cover of Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” on Sept 23. She plugged the cover on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, saying, “🤯9.29.23🎧 pre-save: http://Too.fm/wontbackdown.” You can see the post HERE!
(And Lara isn’t the only member of the Trump family to dabble in the music world.)
But before we get into that, as you can imagine, Lara’s cover has gotten some seriously split reactions on the internet, and many are resurfacing a previous incident involving the Trump family and the Petty family.
The song was previously used during a rally for former US President Donald Trump back in 2020 in Oklahoma, to which the Petty family spoke out against it. The Petty family made a post that many have been referring to on X that reads, “Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.”
They added, “Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his used for a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together… Concurrently, we have issued an official cease and desist notice to the Trump campaign.”
Despite this, Lara went ahead three years later and covered the song.
Now, remember how we said another Trump family member has dabbled in music? Well, in case you don’t remember, Tiffany Trump released a single in 2011 called “Like a Bird” featuring Sprite and Logic.
In a previous interview with Oprah, per Broward Beach New Times, Tiffany spoke about her possible music career at the time, saying: “I love music. It’s always been very dear to me. It’s a big passion. It’s more of a hobby right now, but we’ll see in a couple of years if I want to take it to the next level as a professional.”
