One of the weirdest rumors to develop after the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein came from the British tabloids. The Daily Mailleaned hard into the speculation that this was Meghan Markle‘s time to dive into politics and “throw her hat in the ring to serve out the remaining 13 months of Feinstein’s term.” They seemed to think that serving in Congress was going to be the driving force in her rebrand.
That seemed that a far reach even for the Duchess of Sussex, who is certainly politically minded, but has never expressed a keen desire to run for office at this stage of her career. That didn’t stop the media outlet’s sources from fueling the Washington D.C. frenzy, “Meghan is definitely a long shot but in the craziness that is US politics these days it’s not an impossibility. Crazier things have happened,” they said.
The insider didn’t even seem to consider that it was California Gov. Gavin Newsom who had the responsibility to appoint Feinstein’s replacement, and we doubt Meghan even crossed his mind. And — spoiler alert — he picked somebody else, according to Politico. Newsom moved quickly to fill the seat and named EMILY’s List President Laphonza Butler as the heir apparent because the Democrats needed to keep their slight majority in the Senate. The Meghan speculation seemed to come into play since Newsom had pledged to fill the role with a Black woman.
With Newsom not appointing anyone who had already announced their candidacy for the Senate seat in 2024, including Rep. Barbara Lee, the British tabloids probably thought Meghan would make for a great headline. “[Newsom] needs to find a woman of color who can do the job for 13 months and will agree to not stand against any of the seasoned politicians who have already thrown their hats into the ring,” the source claimed. “There are not that many women who fit the bill. Which is why Meghan’s name is being bandied about.” And boy, was this rumor wrong!
