Taylor Swift makes waves wherever she goes, but she probably didn’t expect NFL viewers to have so many opinions about her dating life. It seems that there are a few football fans who don’t love that she’s dating one of their own, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

There are many NFL followers who don’t share the same politics as the pop star so they are leaning heavily into their criticism of Swift — and honestly, it’s unfair. The right-wing media outlet, The Federalist, capitalized on the Eras Tour superstar’s headline-grabbing name by writing, “Taylor Swift’s Popularity Is A Sign Of Societal Decline.” That seems a bit dramatic, doesn’t it? And Republican men seem to suddenly have an opinion of Swift and it usually involves a social media post like this: “Taylor Swift is mid.”

Why are they so triggered by a successful female artist dating a football player? But never fear, Swifties are always here to back up their queen with a supportive argument. “On the opening night in Glendale, Ariz., the concert brought in more revenue for local businesses than Super Bowl LVII, which was held back in February in the same stadium. To use that event as a comparison, Swift has been performing two to three Super Bowls every week,” wrote one supporter on X, formerly Twitter.

But as Media Mattersnoted, criticism of Swift is more of a symptom of certain far-right political supporters being angry at Kelce for his apparent left-wing ideology (if you believe the hype.) He’s “facing backlash from right-wing fans” because of his Pfizer and Bud Light commercials (COVID-19 vaccines and beer are a GOP hot topic). Not every athlete is a Republican, but some NFL fans are going to blame Swift for bringing Kelce over to the left — even though it seems he made that choice himself a long time ago.
