Mindy Kaling Is Looking for Her Rom-Com Ending Even Though Fans Still Ship Her With Ex B.J. Novak

Mindy Kaling isn’t a Hollywood celebrity who flaunts her romantic relationships all over her social media page. She usually prefers to keep that aspect of her life out of the spotlight, but she might be changing her tune if the right person enters her life.

It sounds like the 44-year-old actress is looking for her rom-com ending with the way she described her belief in love on the Today show on Monday. “I’m still a romantic at heart, and I write these stories about people finding love when they least expect it,” she shared. “So, of course, I’m open to that, and I believe in magic and timing.” And it’s so sweet that her fairy-tale dream started with two A-list stars.

“I had this over-active imagination ‘cause, even then, I was, like, a writer and a creative, so I used to love these stories about people falling in love and going to movies, and seeing Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in romantic comedies and all that,” she explained. You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle are iconic — and it’s easy to see why Kaling dreamed of finding her perfect mate with a Hollywood ending. But fans think she’s missing out on the perfect person who is right in front of her: B.J. Novak.

They still ship the former couple, who were on and off more times than anyone could count. Their relationship ended for good in 2007, but that didn’t stop their BFF status from blossoming. Novak remains a big part of her life as her daughters’ godfather, and his sweetness with her girls only adds to the hype surrounding the fans’ fantasy relationship. At the 2023 Producers Guild Awards, The Office star described his relationship with Kaling as a “tumultuous, romantic, toxic, boundary-less mess” between two “reckless idiots” who “were in love with each other.” If this was a rom-com script, you just know that Kaling would end up with Novak in the end.
