If the 2024 presidential electionwasn’t already fascinating enough, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. decided to shake up the race. He’s decided to take his controversial platform away from the Democrats and run as an independent candidate. While he was unlikely to get that Democratic nomination, his calculated move could affect both the Democrats and the Republicans.

RFK Jr. announced the news at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Monday to his voter base and he made his intentions very clear. “The Democrats are frightened that I’m going to spoil the election for President Biden, and the Republicans are frightened that I’m going to spoil it for Trump,” he told the crowd, via The New York Times. “The truth is, they’re both right. My intention is to spoil it for both of them.” The environmentalist lawyer’s greatest challenge in trying to mount a respectable fight is the costly road to getting on the ballot in all 50 states first.

RFK Jr.’s run is unprecedented for a Kennedy family member since he’s breaking off from their traditional core Democratic stance. So far, he’s leaned into conspiracy theories, the anti-vax community, and he’s waffled back and forth on supporting a federal ban on abortion. Let’s just say, a few of his relatives aren’t too pleased by the headlines he is generating. His siblings, Rory Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Hon. Joseph P. Kennedy II, and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend denounced him in an official social media statement.

“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment,” they wrote in the joint statement. “Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country.” A vast majority of the Kennedys are sticking with Joe Biden, but RFK Jr. is here to shake up the race — for better or for worse.
