Even though Kate Middleton was never able to meet her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, a royal author is noting that the two women share this one particular similarity. It’s something that they both could relate to in their roles as the Princess of Wales because few people experience life behind palace walls.

Tessa Dunlop, author of , explained to OK! Magazine what it’s like to be thrust into the spotlight as a member of the royal family. “I think in some ways, Kate feels probably quite lonely,” she said. “She’s left the category of a lone ranger or rich girl from her home county and has become this sort of stratospherically famous, influential individual and I think that’s probably quite a lonely position.”

Andrew Morton, who wrote Diana’s 1992 biography, Diana: Her Story, shared a similar tale to Kate’s in the 2017 documentary, Princess Diana: Tragedy or Treason?, via Fox News. He said, “[Diana felt like] this kind of media cut-out… she felt like she was enduring a lonely miserable life inside the palace and outside, she was adored… It was incredibly frustrating as far as she was concerned because everyone still believed in the fairy tale. And she knew it was a nightmare.”

While Kate’s life seems to have more internal support, thanks to her “good relationship” with her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, there are very few people who understand what she’s going through on any given day. Because Diana “died before she got to Kate’s age,” the current Princess of Wales “is now in uncharted waters in modern history,” so she can no longer follow her late mother-in-law’s blueprint, according to Dunlop. Diana’s legacy can guide her, but Kate is now in a place of “soft power” where her “role is an incredibly influential one” that is rewriting history.
