In 2011, one of Hollywood’s long-lasting power couples split up and the consequences resulted in almost a decade of other A-list celebrities picking sides in the fight. Rob Lowe, who was friends with both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, found himself in the middle of their breakup after the action star revealed his affair with his family’s housekeeper, Mildred Baena. His infidelity resulted in a son, Joseph, and it sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
Now, Schwarzenegger is good-naturedly teasing Lowe on his Literally! podcast about choosing sides in the fight. “Let the story be told that since I got divorced from Maria, you haven’t been around much,” Schwarzenegger joked.
“I think she got custody,” quipped Lowe.
“You wanted to prove to her that you’re loyal to her and not me,” Schwarzenegger added “So, because even though we didn’t have any of those things, we always had friends that were loyal to me and to her, and they didn’t get involved in all of this stuff, but I mean, you did,” Arnold added. “It was, like, unbelievable how all of a sudden I said to Maria, ‘Why is Rob not showing up?'”
Despite the ribbing toward the West Wing actor, the former California governor was a bit emotional about the lapse in their friendship. “We had a lot of fun. And you came over to the house all the time. I kind of missed all that stuff,” he continued “But you know, maybe eventually you’re gonna wake up and say, you know, ‘I can hang out with Arnold again and Maria’s not gonna decapitate me.'”
Schwarzenegger has been opening up about his relationship with his ex-wife on his promotional tour for his new book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life. He believes they will always be connected, even though his terrible choices ruined their marriage. “We never left the [first] chapter. Because remember, it’s not like we had a feud,” he told People. “We didn’t have a fight. It’s just my f**k up, right?” The 76-year-old actor lives with those regrets, but it looks like he’s attempting to make amends. With his friendship with Lowe back on track, the two actors will be kicking back and reminiscing about the old days in no time.
