One highly anticipated project that many royal watchers are waiting for after Queen Elizabeth II‘s passing is a rich biography about her life. While the search is reportedly on for a notable historian to tackle the massive project, there is someone who apparently isn’t thrilled about a look-back at her life: King Charles III.
While he, of course, loves and misses his mother, there is no way a book about her life can skip over Charles’ tumultuous marriage to Princess Diana. He knows that he made quite a few poor choices during that era, and reexaminations of his behavior certainly don’t make him look too good. It’s not exactly how King Charles would like to frame his reign on the throne since he’s worked for decades to repair his and Queen Camilla’s images.
Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, understands the pressure Charles feels to deliver a biography of his mother’s life while questioning whether it’s the wisest move for him. “Any serious book has to examine the more difficult aspects of the King’s relationship with his mother,” he toldThe Telegraph. “That’s why I wonder whether it can possibly be published in his lifetime.
Lacey recalled “the breakup of Charles’s marriage to Diana” and the reported tale that “the Queen told Charles she wanted ‘nothing to do’ with Camilla – whom she described as ‘that wicked woman’ – and that Prince Charles himself was close to tears over this.” Charles would rather the public forget that he and Camilla had a years-long torrid affair while they were both married to other people.
One solution might be to divide her life into several volumes since Elizabeth’s reign lasted 70 years. The first volume of her life could be published in the next several years and the second volume, which would be more incriminating to King Charles, could be published after his death. It’s not an ideal situation since royal fans are clamoring for the publication, but it might possibly salvage Charles and Camilla’s rehabbed reputation.
