Jada Pinkett Smith‘s memoir Worthyis still a few days away from release, but it’s already been garnering a lot of attention as she has been promoting the book. She’s left people floored with the revelation that she and Will Smith have been leading separate lives for the past seven years, even going as far as to say that she was “shocked” when Smith referred to her as his wife during the infamous 2022 Oscar moment with Chris Rock.
Smith has been somewhat quiet as Pinkett Smith has continued to open up in a raw and candid manner. But the Men in Black actor has finally ended his silence and given fans a glimpse into the inner workings of his and Pinkett Smith’s unconventional relationship.
In a new interview with the New York Times, Pinkett Smith warns readers that her book isn’t going to be a “fluffy journey,” adding that she starts the book by “drop[ping] you right into one of the darkest moments of my life, and then we’ll backtrack.” Apparently, the method worked, as her estranged husband Smith was caught completely off guard by what he read.
Smith told NYT via email that the book served as a wakeup call for him. “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life,” he wrote, “a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.” Paraphrasing Smith, the article said that ultimately the actor realized that Pinkett Smith is more “resilient, clever, and compassionate than he’d understood.”
And while the two still seemingly have a lot to work out, it seems like they are on good terms. Pinkett Smith revealed that she had an ayahuasca session a year after the Oscars Slap, and Smith was also present for this soul-searching event. “You’ll have to cut off your spirit’s wrist to break free of our Divine handcuffs,” he told Pinkett Smith as she was coming down from the substance, which is a plant-based psychedelic that has been used by First Nations peoples in ceremonial settings for centuries.
As the two continue to navigate through their unconventional relationship, one thing is certain: the two are taking a good, hard look at their relationship and doing what they can to support each other’s growth and respective life journeys.
