As the bombshell allegations made by Britney Spears in her upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, start coming out one by one, the book‘s most recent allegation is taking us all by surprise.
To explain the reaction, let’s backtrack: when Spears and Justin Timberlake broke things off in 2002, Timberlake released his hit song “Cry Me a River.” In the video, Timberlake sings to a Spears lookalike who had just cheated on him. As fans watched, they clearly put two and two together and assumed Spears cheated, leading to their breakup.
Now, many years after the fact, Spears is setting the record straight and alleging that it was the “Sexy Back” singer who was unfaithful instead. According to TMZ, Spears claims in her tell-all memoir that Timberlake cheated on her with “another celebrity.”
As for a name, however, Spears won’t be getting into specifics on who it was with. “The woman now has a family,” the outlet stated, noting that Spears “doesn’t want to embarrass [her.]”
Despite Spears not wanting to name-drop the alleged “other woman,” Page Six and an eagle-eyed Twitter user were quick to resurface an old rumor that Timberlake cheated on Spears with girl group All Saints member Nicole Appleton.
According to the newspaper cutout of the time, Timberlake and Appleton were spotted together in 2000 as they hopped on a car together from the Mayfair Club to the St. Martins Lane hotel. In addition to the headline, which was “Nic and guy act so shy,” the story also claimed that the two immediately got shy and ducked their heads when the paparazzi came suggesting that they “had something to hide.”
Although we won’t have any confirmation about Timberlake’s loyalty to Spears or his relationship with Appleton anytime soon, it’s safe to say Timberlake and Spears’ breakup was much less straightforward than we initially thought!
