John Stamos Remembers the ‘Confusing’ Moment That Led to Him Sobering Up Amid Alcohol Addiction

Although not everyone needs to hit the so-called “rock bottom” to reflect on their life and choose to do better, sometimes it takes a sudden wakeup call to make a drastic and lasting change. ForFuller House starJohn Stamos, that wakeup call was exactly the push he needed to get sober.

As the new cover star for People, Stamos, who has a tell-all memoir entitled If You Would Have Told Me coming out later this month, opened up about his long and complicated journey with alcohol addiction. “I had to sober up. I was just drinking too much,” Stamos told the outlet. “I just went low. I didn’t go high. I just surrounded myself with people I shouldn’t have been with.”

Despite making these unhealthy choices, however, it wasn’t until his 2015 DUI that he started taking the idea of sobering up seriously. “I had that DUI and I was like, ‘I can’t do this. I’ve got to straighten up,'” he remembered. “That’s when I was confusing the universe because I’m not a bad person, but I was doing crappy things.”

As a result, the actor entered rehab and began his path of sobriety. “[Rehab] was dark for a little bit,” he remembered, noting that it soon “started to get better.” With time, Stamos started looking at it all in a more positive light. “[I] made a lot of really good friends,” he said.

“I had a lot waiting for me, and I feel bad because a lot of people don’t, because they burned their lives down,” he added. “Luckily, I had my sisters, but I also had Fuller House. I got home and I think like a week later, we started Fuller House.”

Not only did Stamos start Fuller House, but his life has been full of milestone since becoming sober, including meeting his wife Caitlin McHugh, getting married, and becoming a father. Kudos to him for keeping it up!
