The early 2000s were a wild time in Hollywood gossip history, but Britney Spears is making sure fans don’t forget some of the hot tea that she’s spilling in her upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me. The 41-year-old pop star is reminding everyone of the brief, but steamy, fling she had with this A-list actor.
In the weeks after her breakup with Justin Timberlake, who had already slept with “six or seven girls,” Spears tried to comfort herself with another man: Colin Farrell. The duo were introduced by a “club promoter friend” and suddenly, she found herself visiting him on the set of the movie, S.W.A.T. She described their sudden coupledom as “a two-week brawl,” according to an excerpt obtained by Time. “Brawl is the only word for it—we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight,” she wrote.
The public was soon let in on this unusual relationship when she showed up as Farrell’s plus one on the red carpet of his 2003 movie, The Recruit. The paparazzi went wild, and the actor had no problem dishing (a little) about Spears. “We’re not dating. She’s a sweet, sweet girl. There’s nothing going on—just mates,” he told reporters, per EW. But the rumors were swirling while Spears started to have doubts about Farrell because her heart was still broken from the Timberlake split. “As I had before when I’d felt too attached to a man, I tried to convince myself in every way that it was not a big deal, that we were just having fun, that in this case, I was vulnerable because I wasn’t over Justin yet,” she continued.
Even though she truly believed that “for a brief moment in time, I did think there could be something there” with Farrell, she couldn’t stop thinking about the boy bander. “He was a girl’s dream,” she wistfully shared about Timberlake in the book. “I was in love with him.” It just crushing to think of a young Spears during this raw and emotional time — and how publicly it all played out.
