Barbie and Ken, Wednesday and M3GAN were expected to be the hottest Halloween costumes for 2023, but SAG-AFTRA may have put a screeching halt to some of the actors’ fun holiday plans. On Thursday, the union issued some strike guidelines for its members to follow that put a damper on the fun.

SAG-AFTRA is now asking actors to “celebrate Halloween this year while also staying in solidarity” with its fight against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Halloween certainly isn’t cancelled, but the union made suggestions on their website. “Choose costumes inspired by generalized characters and figures (ghost, zombie, spider, etc.),” they wrote. That means no characters from any “TV, theatrical, or streaming” property — and be careful with social media snapshots. SAG-AFTRA recommended that no member should “post photos of costumes inspired by struck content” to their accounts.

The union wants to use their “collective power to send a loud and clear message to [the] struck employers” that the striking actors “will not promote their content without a fair contract.” It’s going to be hard for the 160,000 group to send a message to the studio when Wednesday, Barbie, and Ken will probably be on America’s top costumes for Halloween this year.

However, there may be a bit of wiggle room from projects that have interim agreements like Jacob Elordi’s version of Elvis from the upcoming movie, Priscilla, because studio A24 is in the clear. But don’t you dare be caught in an Austin Butler Elvis costume because Warner Bros. is being picketed right now. It may seem like SAG-AFTRA is being picky about this situation, but they want to get their actors off the picket line and back to set where they belong — only if the AMPTP gives them the deal they deserve.
