It isn’t surprising to see Donald Trump lashing out after a day in the courtroom or on social media — it’s easy to see that he doesn’t love his current legal situation. While people have become accustomed to his rants and raves, legal experts are starting to sound the warning bell that the former president’s language has become rather inflammatory toward the judges presiding over his cases — and it has them very worried.
Some of the issues about Donald Trump’s escalating “verbal assaults” come directly from the gag orders issued by Judge Arthur Engoron, who is ruling on his New York business fraud case, and Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over his election inference indictment. “Trump’s attacks on judges poison the civil atmosphere and make physical attacks … more likely,” retired Massachusetts judge and Harvard Law School lecturer Nancy Gertner explained to The Guardian. “Trump is challenging the very role of judges.”
Donald Trump has always been a disruptor in his career. He’s disrupted the real estate industry, Washington, D.C. and now, critics believe he is hoping to “disrupt the judicial system,” which is extremely dangerous. By calling Judge Chutkan “VERY BIASED And UNFAIR” on Truth Social, the former president’s followers sometimes irrationally act out based on what he is feeding them. One woman was arrested in August for threatening the life of Judge Chutkan via a letter, but it could quite possibly get worse if Donald Trump doesn’t abide by the gag orders which prohibit him from trying to “vilify [the prosecutor] and implicitly encourage violence against public servants who are simply doing their jobs.”
Democratic congressman Jamie Raskin described Donald Trump as a “mob boss” and added, “For him, a judge is either a lackey in his pocket or his sworn enemy. Trump’s legal and political agendas are fused at this point. His whole strategy is to avoid a reckoning with justice before the election.” Donald Trump’s strategy is certainly making headlines, but legal experts would prefer to avoid another Jan. 6 type of situation because it only causes more division to an already divisive landscape.
