Queen Elizabeth’s childhood friend Lady Glenconner had no love for Meghan Markle when she spoke out about the former Suits star and her friend’s grandson, Prince Harry, in a recent podcast interview.
The 91-year-old was a long-time companion of the late queen and even served as one of her maids of honor at her coronation in 1953 as well as acting as the lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth’s sister Princess Margaret.
During an appearance on the “Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth” podcast, per Page Six, Glenconner claimed Markle, 42, had no idea what she signed up for when she married the 39-year-old prince.
“I think the thing about Meghan was, she had no idea what was expected of her really,” she said, also accusing Markle of expecting that she would be “riding around in a golden coach.”
“I think she just thought it was sort of like being another actress, you know,” said Glenconner. Despite her criticism of Markle, she was sympathetic towards Harry when discussing the couple’s shared decision to step back from their royal duties and move to the US, saying: “I think it was very sad and I feel very sad for Harry.”
That said, Glenconner did note that being a working royal is “very boring” and most of their days are spent forcing a smile while “meeting hundreds of thousands of people that you’re never going to meet again.”
Taking her criticism of Markle a step further, Glenconner alleged that American politician John Kerry shared her view of the actress and claimed he told her that the general public in the US did too. “He said, ‘We all feel very, very sorry for Harry,’” according to Glenconner who recalled an alleged conversation with Kerry at King Charles III’s Coronation. “I think I can just leave it at that.”
Since leaving the royal family in 2020, Prince Harry and Markle have discussed the racism and mistreatment they allegedly experienced since their relationship began in 2016. Markle has been open about battling with deteriorating mental health due to this treatment.
