Prince Harry’s feud with King Charles III and Prince William has been at the top of the news cycle for the last three years, but there have been plenty of royal tiffs over the years. The palace pretends that this the first rift to surface in the modern era when it was quite clear that Princess Diana didn’t see eye-to-eye with Charles’ sister, Princess Anne

The disagreement began over godchildren. Charles was godfather to Anne’s oldest child, Peter Phillips, but he didn’t return the favor when William was baptized. According to Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult author, Robert Lacey, Diana was blamed for the oversight. “According to [a] rumor, [Charles] had very much wanted to invite his sister, only to be blocked by his wife [the late Princess Diana],” he told the New York Post.

Anne reportedly didn’t have the kindest nickname for her sister-in-law, calling her “The Dope” behind her back. She also didn’t love that the Princess of Wales was grabbing all of the headlines despite Anne’s label of being “the hardest working royal.” (A very familiar topic in the royal household!) When it was time for Harry to be christened in 1984, Diana skipped over Anne again for the godmother position. Anne took it in her own hands to spend the weekend “out in the Gloucestershire countryside, 85 miles to the west, shooting rabbits” instead of going to the baptism.

Anne reportedly made the excuse that she had planned the trip three months in advance and “felt that it would be rude to un-invite her guests to her country home.” She sent her kids, Zara, and Peter, instead. So there was no love lost between the two women and it just proves that the palace has a long history of family feuds, long before Harry and Meghan Markle.
