Matthew Perry‘s shocking death at the age of 54 has drawn numerous tributes from his Friends castmates and other celebrities who worked with him over the years. One of the most important voices, who chimed in on Monday, shared a crushing tribute that shows just how difficult Perry’s world was as a recovering addict.
Molly Hurwitz, Perry’s ex-fiancée, dated the actor from 2018 until 2021. Her raw expression of their relationship proved how deep their love was and also how rough it was at times. The 32-year-old literary manager described her ex as “talented” in an Instagram post that included a snapshot of Perry’s silhouette overlooking a snowy European cityscape. She shared some of their personal moments as they “rewatched” Friends together ahead of the reunion.
“’F**k, I was so good!!!…See what I did there???,'” she recalled Perry saying. “We rewound and studied scenes. Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.” With those moments of passion, Hurwitz also revealed how some of the darkness surrounding his recovery crept into their romance.
“But I obviously knew that man in a very different way, too. While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known,” Hurwitz wrote. “No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.” The mixed emotions of her struggles with him during their engagement are felt in every word of her post.
She also praised Al-Anon for being an “invaluable resource for those who love someone struggling with this destructive disease.” Hurwitz signed off on her post with a heartbreaking ending, writing, “Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace. Sincerely,Moll-o-Rama(…fication).”
The couple got engaged in November 2020 after two years of dating. By June 2021, they had called it quits on their romance and Perry rather curtly explained his split to People, “Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best.” Their relationship seemed filled with a lot of love, but also a lot of long-lasting pain.
