Today, Nov. 3, marks the theatrical release date of the long-awaited movie based on Priscilla Presley‘s book, Elvis and Me. The movie, simply titled Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny and Euphoria‘s Jacob Elordi, focuses on Priscilla’s perspective throughout their controversial relationship.
And although fans of Presley, Elordi and the movie’s director Sofia Coppola will be lining up this weekend to watch the release, there’s one important figure in Priscilla’s life who was not supportive of the movie.
As it turns out, Priscilla’s daughter, the late Lisa Marie Presley, strongly disapproved on the movie’s direction. In fact, she felt so strongly that she sent her scathing review to Coppola in two emails obtained by Variety.
“My father only comes across as a predator and manipulative,” Lisa Marie reportedly wrote in the September emails. As a reminder, Priscilla and Elvis’ relationship began in 1959 when Priscilla was 14 and Elvis was 24.
“As his daughter, I don’t read this and see any of my father in this character,” Lisa Marie continued. “I don’t read this and see my mother’s perspective of my father. I read this and see your shockingly vengeful and contemptuous perspective and I don’t understand why?”
Lisa Marie, who was notoriously supportive of Baz Luhrmann’s depiction of her father in Elvis, continued her review, saying that she wouldn’t shy away from calling out the movie on social media. “I will be forced to be in a position where I will have to openly say how I feel about the film and go against you, my mother and this film publicly,” she wrote. In addition to the movie being based on Priscilla’s book, Priscilla also executive produced the project.
As a response to the emails, Coppola said she hoped Lisa Marie would change her mind when seeing the final edit. “I hope that when you see the final film you will feel differently, and understand I’m taking great care in honoring your mother, while also presenting your father with sensitivity and complexity,” Coppola wrote back.
Unfortunately, Lisa Marie’s sudden passing in January of this year means she won’t be here to either reevaluate or to continue her criticisms about the final movie. Now it’s up to us to watch Coppola’s version and make the decision ourselves.
