Friends fans, brace yourselves for this alternate-universe storyline that almost happened on the long-running NBC show — and we reportedly have Matthew Perry to thank for putting a stop to it. If the series’ writers had their way, Monica, played by Courteney Cox, and Chandler, played by Perry might not have been endgame.

According to actress Lisa Cash, who appeared as a flight attendant on the Season 5 episode, “The One in Vegas: Part 1,” Chandler was supposed to cheat on Monica in her original role. She told TMZ that she “came in as a guest star on Friends” to play a room service worker who gets involved with Chandler after he got into an argument with Monica over her “lunch with Richard (Tom Selleck).” Cash continued, “Chandler goes up to the hotel room, orders room service, and I bring it up as a hotel worker. We end up talking, laughing, and connecting… and Chandler ends up cheating on Monica with my character.” Mic drop.

Cash was “excited” about the opportunity on the hit show, but after rehearsing, things suddenly changed behind the scenes. “The day before we were shooting before a live audience, I was told [Perry] went to the writers and said that the audience would never forgive him for cheating on Monica… which he was probably right,” she revealed. “That would have changed possibly the course of the show and his character.” She was downgraded from a guest star to a co-star, but Cash doesn’t hold a grudge against Perry for defending Chandler’s character

She said Perry was “likable and welcoming” to her on set and it was “fun doing the scene with him” even though it never aired. Cash also made a good point that “it was a good move” on his part because Friends already had Ross and Rachel’s cheating situation and fans didn’t need another “we were on a break” moment.
