Even though the presidential election is a year away, one political expert, who just happens to be a Democrat, thinks President Joe Biden may step aside and let someone else run on his party’s ticket. This statement shouldn’t be taken too lightly because it comes from former Barack Obama adviser, David Axelrod.
The political commentator was reacting to the alarming news from a New York Times and Siena College poll that Donald Trump was ahead of Joe Biden by a sizable margin in five crucial states: Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Georgia, and Arizona. Axelrod wrote on X, “It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm. He’s defied CW before but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party–not ‘bed-wetting,’ but legitimate concern.”
Axelrod believes that Joe Biden’s age is coming into play, but “his biggest liability is the one thing he can’t change.” He also warns that Donald Trump “is a dangerous, unhinged demagogue whose brazen disdain for the rules, norms, laws and institutions or democracy should be disqualifying.” With “the stakes of miscalculation…too dramatic to ignore,” he believes that Joe Biden needs to make a very unselfish decision sooner versus later.
“Only @JoeBiden can make this decision,” Axelrod noted. “If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?” And even though there is a “risk associated with changing course now,” he believes that “there is a lot of leadership talent in the Democratic Party, poised to emerge.” With Donald Trump knee-deep in legal woes and Joe Biden not polling well a year out from the election, there is a possibility that the 2024 presidential candidates look much different than Americans expected.
