With reviews like “Best Book of 2023” and “A certified page turner,” fans of Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy novel Fourth Wing were dying to know what happens next in The Empyrean saga. Luckily for them, however, it only took Yarros and her publisher Red Tower Books a few months to release the second book of the series: Iron Flame.

To understand the story of the second book, let’s backtrack. Fourth Wing tells the story of Violet Sorrengail, a frail yet impossibly smart 20-year-old who is set to attend Basgiath War College in the mythical land of Navarre. On Conscription Day –the day when they’re assigned their Quadrant– Violet’s mother forces her to choose the most noble yet challenging option: becoming a dragon rider.

“With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success,” the description reads. “Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda―because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.”

Iron Flame then begins after Violet’s managed to survive her first year at Basgiath against all the odds stacked against her. But, despite her growing skills, the challenges this year brings are more “grueling and maliciously brutal,” the description reads.

“Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits―and a will of iron,” the description teases. “And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.”

Despite the book just being released, fans of Yarros are already pouring in their positive reviews on Amazon. “What I can say is it was worth every second staying awake all night and day to read it. I couldn’t put it down,” wrote one reviewer. “So many twists, so many hard choices and gut-wrenching situations, emotional turmoil and revelations for our characters, so much lore, and even if I saw the twists at the end coming from a few pages away, the impact still stopped my heart when I read them.”

“[Iron Flame] drew me in, it hooked me in its grip and didn’t let go,” wrote another reviewer. “Not even after the last word. I am still firm enmeshed within the Empyrean world and I DO NOT want to leave.”
