Donald Trump may be telling his voter base that everything is just fine, but behind the scenes, it is reportedly a bit chaotic. The former president is only in the middle of his first of four trials and he’s apparently struggling with how dire his legal situation truly is.
New York Times journalist and author of Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, told CNN that Donald Trump is “very, very angry’ at the four indictments, which range from business fraud to obstruction of justice, because he does “not want to be sentenced to prison.” She claims his 2024 presidential campaign is trying to spin things for his supporters. Haberman explained that there is an “enormous amount of energy invested in Trump portraying himself as fine and nothing bothering him.”
Donald Trump’s New York civil case has turned into quite a circus with his frequent outbursts, but Haberman believes that his upcoming federal cases will be a sobering reminder of the serious charges he faces. “But it will actually have the effect of, in a weird way, quieting him because he can’t pull the same kinds of stunts in a federal criminal court case that he did in this New York civil trial,” she said. “We will see how this all ends up.”
Donald Trump’s campaign staffers have a huge task ahead of them with the Iowa caucuses up first on Jan. 15, 2024. “[His staff] acknowledges that they have to get through Iowa, which has never been a great state for Trump,” Haberman added. “If the former president can eke out a win in Iowa, the seeming inevitability of his candidacy will become less disputable.”
