Like many stars through the years, many of their greatest accomplishments and touching moments only come to light after their passing. When it comes to Matthew Perry, who sadly passed away on Oct 28, the public is learning more about his personal life now than ever before, including his heartwarming friendship with fellow actor Michael J. Fox.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Fox, who was celebrating his annual fundraising benefit for The Michael J. Fox Foundation, looked back at their decades-long friendship. “Matthew and I had spent some time together over the years,” he told the outlet. “He was a hockey player, a good hockey player, and we played hockey together.”
Fox continued, remembering a touching gesture Perry made in the height of his Friends fame. “Perhaps this is indiscreet, hope he doesn’t mind, but when they first made their big sale and were made millionaires for the rest of their lives, he wrote a big fat check to the foundation,” Fox revealed. “We were really early on and trying to find our feet. And it was such a tremendous vote of confidence.” What an incredible gift!
“And it wasn’t accompanied by any self-aggrandizing or anything, he was just like, ‘Take it and do your best,'” Fox said looking back. “I loved that.”
“He was just a funny guy,” Fox added. “If I was ever as funny as him – I mean, he was the funniest – I’m happy I had an impact on him. He was a funny guy.” Talk about a heartwarming friendship!
After sharing the touching interview on TikTok, fans of Perry and Fox are understandably reaching for a handkerchief to dry their tears. “Just when I thought I didn’t have any more tears for Matty, here I am, bawling… 😭😭,” wrote one user. “I’m still processing his death… it doesn’t seem real,” wrote another user. “To hear this story warmed my heart and soul!”
“And now I love Matthew Perry more!!!” commented another user.
And although it may be hard to remind ourselves of how great Perry was now that he’s passed, we’re sure he’d be happy to know how fondly the world, and his longtime friends, remember him and his unwavering kindness.
