Royal watchers have been waiting on pins and needles for Omid Scobie’s bombshell book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, and while it’s not on bookshelves until Nov. 28, an excerpt is already sounding alarm bells. The author dives heavily into the fractured relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry and makes some rather shocking claims about the future king.

While the hurt was obvious after the Duke of Sussex published his memoir, Spare, it’s the alleged retaliation by Prince of Wales that has everyone buzzing. Scobie, noted in an excerpt published by People, that the royal family isn’t seeing its own demise — instead they are participating in it. He believes that the palace doesn’t want to acknowledge the feud because “part of the buy-in from the [British] public is that the royal family is the nation’s family.” In order to keep that facade in play, William is doubling down on his duty to the crown and reportedly “quietly cooperating with the U.K. press to undermine Harry.”

“I was talking to a source quite early on in the process, and they called Harry a ‘defector’ and said that was William’s view,” Scobie told the media outlet. “These were two men who once upon a time were firmly aligned in their outlook. One of them had to move on to also protect the crown.” With William having to bow to his future role, he may be trying to cut down any obstacle that reveals how unsettling things can be behind palace walls. If there’s anyone who knows and understands that best, it’s his younger brother, whose communication preference is to air it all out.

The differences in the brothers’ procedural style will never align and it appears that Prince William has shut the door for good on their relationship. The alleged retaliatory moves with the British tabloids don’t signal a very healthy sense of self though, especially for the future King of England. It’s something that the entire family will have to reconcile with and realize that their partnership with the media has always been problematic — it’s better to fix the issues inside the palace walls first.
