Love stories often start in the most unexpected of places. Take for instance Travis Kelce‘s near-miss with Taylor Swift when he tried to catch her attention with a Swiftie friendship bracelet back in July at one of her Eras Tour shows. The sweet gesture nearly missed its mark, however, leaving their potential love story hanging by a thread. Fortunately for the Kansas City Chiefs tight end he had some unexpected allies within Swift’s own camp.
Kelce just gave a ton of insight to his and Swift’s romance for his cover story of Wall Street Journal, even though at first he was hesitant to jump into the entire story. “I don’t know if I want to get into all of it,” Kelce said before ultimately sharing the details of how it all went down at the famous Eras show.
“There were definitely people she knew that knew who I was, in her corner [who said]: Yo! Did you know he was coming? I had somebody playing Cupid,” Kelce explained, adding that he wasn’t even aware of the strings being pulled in his favor until Swift contacted him directly.
“She told me exactly what was going on and how I got lucky enough to get her to reach out,” Kelce noted. So what exactly pushed Swift to make the fateful call? It turns out it was two of Swift’s own family members.
“She’ll probably hate me for saying this, but…when she came to Arrowhead [for her tour], they gave her the big locker room as a dressing room, and her little cousins were taking pictures…in front of my locker,” Kelce explained, per People. By the time the two met face-to-face in New York, they had already been talking and Kelce was ready to take things to the next level. The two have since been spotted dining at some of the most photographed celebrity restaurants and at Kansas City Chiefs games.
And now that Kelce’s fame has launched into another stratosphere thanks to his new beau, he is dealing with a lot of new feelings. “[I’ve] never dated anyone with that kind of aura about them,” he explained, adding that while the newfound media attention is something he’s never dealt with, he’s “not running away from it” and also touched on the fact that he and Swift seem to be aligned in a lot of ways that make for a strong romantic foundation, including the fact that they are both big on family.
“Everybody knows I’m a family guy,” he said. “Her team is her family. Her family does a lot of stuff in terms of the tour, the marketing, being around, so I think she has a lot of those values as well, which is right up my alley.”
It’s clear that this high-profile duo is dialing up the seriousness in their relationship. With holiday plans already in the works, they’re taking their status as the world’s most talked-about couple to new heights. They share a lot in common, not least of which is a strong emphasis on family values. Some fans are even beginning to speculate that their commitment to each other extends beyond cheering each other on at games and concerts. The whispers are growing louder: could they be contemplating a future together that involves more than just shared public appearances? And what role will Swift’s cousins play this time?
