The last few years for John Travolta have been difficult ones with the loss of his beloved wife, Kelly Preston, and his close pal, Kirstie Alley, to cancer. There are now reports that those tragic life-changing moments may have altered his dedication to the Church of Scientology — and there are some major clues that the rumor could be true.
The controversial church recently had a flashy gala that was hosted by Tom Cruise, but the 69-year-old Travolta was noticeably absent. “Tom Cruise made a grand entrance by helicopter, but John — despite being a pilot with his own plane — opted not to come, leaving attendees puzzled,” a source told the National Enquirer, via Radar Online. The important Scientology event was something Travolta normally would have attended in the past, so the whispers about a possible exit are getting louder.
One of Travolta’s friends told the media outlet that “his level of involvement has waned since the passing of his wife, Kelly Preston, and close friend Kirstie Alley.” They added, “Despite their devout following of Scientology, it tragically didn’t save them.” Preston passed away in July 2020 after keeping her two-year breast cancer battle a secret. Alley also kept her medical issues private while struggling with colon cancer which took her life in December 2022.
While neither Travolta nor the Church of Scientology have commented, it wouldn’t be surprising for his faith to be tested after two major losses in his life. Travolta has largely kept his association with the religion quiet over the last decade in comparison to Cruise’s robust support for Scientology. It just might be Travolta’s way of giving the church a very slow goodbye.
