Donald Trump might come off as brash and confident, but one Marvel Universe director is telling a very different tale.
Taika Waititi, known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok, spent some time with the former president when they shot a 2012 NBC Super Bowl commercial together called “Brotherhood of Man.” The almost four-minute musical clip featured some of the top shows on the network at the time from The Office to yep, you guessed it… The Apprentice, which ran until 2017.
Waititi revealed the “list of demands” Donald Trump had before shooting a single frame for the promotional commercial on the latest episode of the Smartless podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. “I directed Trumpy,” Waititi laughed after Bateman asked if the former reality star had any “specifications” for the shoot. “There was a piece of paper with a list of demands.” That’s when things got really juicy.
According to Waititi, Donald Trump had an aide who kept his confidence up at all times. He shared, “He had a sort of like a make-up person who was also his ego booster. So she would like, touch him up and say, ‘Oh Mr. Trump, oh Mr. Trump, you look fantastic.’” And that wasn’t all — the former president knew exactly what angle he needed to reportedly look as svelte as possible.
“[The camera] had to be a certain height to make him look a little thinner,” the director noted. “I think it had like a sort of, whatever the Pantone of orange was that he had to appear as on screen.” It seemed like a lot of work for a split-second cameo where Donald Trump only uttered the word, “You.” If you blink, you might miss his big moment.
