Ever since Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s death, so many disturbing details came out about how he ran the infamous mansion and how he treated the women he dated/ who worked for him. While some have spoken highly of him after death, the ones closest to him have painted another picture. Recently, Holly Madison has talked about why she wasn’t allowed to wear red lipstick, and the nagging thoughts Hefner left behind. But Hefner’s widow, Crystal Hefner, is telling her side more, and discussing the restrictive rule he put on her.
On a recent episode of Hefner’s podcast Beneath The Surface With Crystal Hefner via OK, she spoke with Hugh’s son Marston Hefner about the estate. “I feel like I was very restricted,” she said. “I think a lot of it was very hard for me, because by the time your dad got older, he didn’t want me out past 6:00 p.m., so I was home before dark most days.”
The Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself author added, “It was hard and it did feel a little bit controlling, and I feel like it did take me a while to understand him, specifically his personality.” She did note she grew to appreciate the lifestyle, but noted more of the trauma she faced.
Speaking of her upcoming memoir: while it won’t be released until Jan 2024, she’s promised “hard stories” and bombshells about the people at the estate who “hurt” her. She said, “The stories are very detailed, and there are things that have never been spoken about before.”
Along with this early time in and the red lipstick rule, it’s been alleged that Hugh made sure the girls were quiet when he was speaking, were not allowed to have partners or apartments, only have blonde hair, and more, per YourTango.
Crystal and Hugh started dating when she was 22 and he was 82, after meeting the year prior. They were together from 2012 until his death in 2017.
